THAT SINKING FEELING
Listeners of BBC Radio 4, and its Today programme, are very familiar with the news bulletins read by the likes of Peter Donaldson, Corrie Corfield, and Charlotte Green. For all their self-assurance, these bulletins – and mainstream broadcasters more generally – have not been conveying and do not convey an accurate picture of the current state of affairs. Here is what our Radio 4 newsreaders ought to be reading out, or something like it.
Nearly 200 years on from the publication of William Cobbett’s Rural Rides, I set off on a motorcycle to gather evidence from around the United Kingdom, in the form of images, and first-hand testimony, to support my understanding of the situation we are in. Regional Rides is my attempt to share that understanding with the public, informed by what I believe to be the best of the material produced for both lay and scientific audiences in recent years.
