A patient leaves the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases – the ‘Min’- which specialises in rheumatology, chronic fatigue, and pain management. The NHS is the largest organisation in Europe, and one of the world’s most effective and efficient health services, according to the World Health Organisation. As the National Health Action Party and others argue, it is now being starved of funds as part of an effort to complete a three decade marketization process yielding a ‘US-style health service’. The British Red Cross has described the resulting situation as a ‘humanitarian crisis’. For thousands of years, medical practitioners have taken a version of the Hippocratic oath, pledging to do no harm; carefully considered industrial and other action – across the board – must surely follow.
